You can pretend you don’t care how you look, but everyone knows this lie is simply the “socially acceptable” way to cope with the sense of hopelessness rampant from the time you first look in the mirror to the time you flick the bathroom light after brushing your teeth.
It’s not socially acceptable to let yourself go; it is merely tolerated–in public. In private, Americans know they are judged for their appearance.
It doesn’t matter how closely you approach the ideal of “beauty”. What matters is that you learn to take a little pride in your appearance. What matters is how you begin to put your best foot forward. America is, by far, the best country in which to live. It’s time American’s began live like it.
